Container update 5th April, 2005


The general chartering activity during March remained at a steady level. The number of fixures concluded, respectively reported,during this time was comparable to the amount of fixtures done during February. Rates are also remaining at a very firm level through all ships' sizes. Due to the fact that the available tonnage for 2005 is becoming more and more limited, particularly in the bigger size above 2000 TEU, we do expect less activity for the next couple of months. We would not be surprised if we witness an increase in forward fixtures with delivery well into 2006 in the next couple of weeks / months.

Above 2000 TEU it was again a hungry Yang Ming Line that proved to be the most active Charterer in that size by taking more than a handful of ships. YML fixed inter alia the E.R. Wellington as well as the E.R Auckland, which have been purchased by Greek Owners, Danaos, from E.R. Schiffahrt, for a period of 12 years at a rate of USD 26,300. This is line with last done concluded in February. CMA CGM was also busy, extending a few ships around 3000/3500 TEU for period of 5 yrs at rates around usd mid 30's. We should also not fail to highlight the fixtures of two Gdynia 2000 types (Lindavia and Westerems) that have been fixed by PONL respectively NYK at very firm rates in the high USD 29's.

Between 1300 and 1900 TEU we noticed once again the least activity. Nevertheless we have noted a few interesting fixtures such as the Conti France which has been fixed by Yang Ming at a remarkable rate of USD 26,500 for a period of 4 years. This is an amazing rate bearing in mind that the ship is only running about 18,0 knots. Also the fixture of the San Cristobal to Hamburg-Sued at a rate of USD 28,000 for a period of 42-48 mos is considered to be slightly in excess of last done for comparable ships.

Around 1000 TEU the activity decreased quite considerably. During the past months, it had been these sizes that were most heavily demanded and had enjoyed the highest rate increases. This trend seemed to have softened now a bit for the time being. Having said that a notable fixture is certainly the fixture of the high spec Amalthea which has been extended by MSL at a rate of USD 20,750. Furthermore the fixture of the Cape Henry to APL at a rate of USD 16,950 for 4 years is slightly above last done.
