The number of fixtures which were done during the last four weeks decreased by about 20 percent in comparision to the previous month. The lesser amount can easily be explaind by the limited supply of ships. However there are also sources in the market claiming that this is a consequence of the reluctance of operators,in particular the major ones, to still commit themselves for long periods at very high rate levels. Indeed we have witnessed a couple of prompter ships in the medium sizes facing difficulties to secure long periods at high rates during the last couple of weeks. On the other hand we have seen a couple of forward fixtures at unaltered high rate levels. So the interesting question is to see whether this was just a seasonal phenomenon or whether we are slowly approaching a turn in market sentiment ???

In the larger size above 2000 TEU it was the fixture of the Luetjenburg catching the markets' attention. The ship has been extended by PONL for an impressive rate of usd 35,000 for a period of 6 months. Also the relets of the 2700 TEU Newbuilding Northern Valence and the 2500 TEU Jan Ritscher from Sinotrans to CP Ships respectively CMA CGM at USD 42,500 for short periods of about 6 months are proving operators' willingness to pay decent money for prompter ships in the larger size.

In the medium size between 1300 and 1900 TEU it was interesting to see that a couple of prompter ships such as the Dorian or the Rinkenis had to accpet shorter periods than actually desired by Owners (see above comments). On the other hand we have witnessed a couple of deals for more forward positions which are showing no sign of a weakening market, such as the extensions of the Hansa Sonderburg and Hansa Rendsburg to CP Ships at a rate of USD 31,500 for 36 months periods.

The activity as well as the rate levels for ships around 1000 TEU picked again up in comparison to the previous month. This is particularly apparent with the fixture of the 1200 TEU Newbuilding Cape Falster to NYK for a period of 4 years at a rate of USD 22,000 as well as the fixtures of three B 183 types at rates between usd 15,500 and 17,000 for periods of 4 respectively 5 years.
