Market Report

Container update 9th June, 2005


The chartering activity during May remained at a fairly moderate level. As mentioned in our previous reports this is mainly caused by the limited number of ships available until the remainder of the year. Unless Charterers are willing to fix forward deliveries in 2006 and more relet positions are entering the market we do not expect activity to increase considerably. We can state that all market segments are still enjoying firm rates, however Operators' willingness to go for long periods in the medium and occasionally in the smaller size seems to ease up a little bit for the moment.

Above 2000 TEU it was APL catching the market's attention by fixing not less than ten 3500 TEU ships at around usd 26,000 for periods of 8 years. Otherwise we should not fail to highlight the fixture of the Gdynia 2100 Type "Classica" which has been absorbed by CP Ships for a period of 4 years at a remarkable rate of USD 33,000. It is furthermore rumoured but not yet confirmed that Doehle has fixed three to five 2500 TEU vessels for 5 year periods at around USD 30,000.

In the medium size between 1300 and 1900 TEU the market seems to stagnate a little bit for the moment. As mentioned above most of the operators do not seem to be overly keen anymore to commit tonnage of that size for longer periods. Having said that the H Langeland still secured a 4 years period with insatiable SYMS at usd 26,000 which is in line with last done. Other ships like the Westerdeich have been fixed for a shorter period of about 12 mos at a rate of USD 32,250 which is slightly in excess of last done for such a period.

In the size around 1000 TEU rates are still slightly improving. The Merito for example secured a 4 years period with MSL at a very decent rate of USD 17,600. Furthermore the fixture of the 834 TEU Vega Topas for a 5 years period to Sinotrans at an impressive rate of USD 15,500 is noteworthy.
