Above 2000 TEU we can only report a very few fixtures, whereof the deal for 3 x 2500 TEU Doehle controlled ships to CCNI with delivery in q1 and q2 2006 seems to be the most interesting one. Unfortunately the hire level has not been disclosed but we believe the rate should be in region of USD 29,000 - 29,500 which would be in line with last done. Otherwise we only witnessed a few short term relets like the Mare Gallicum from YML to CMA for a period of 6 months at around USD 35,000. With only a dozen ships in excess of 2000 TEU, leaving relets aside, remaining open until the end of the year we do not foresee an increase of activity in the larger size but at the same time we are fairly convinced that the rates will remain at a firm level.
As already mentioned in our last report it looks as though the market for the medium size between 1300 and 1900 TEU is holding it's breath for the moment. Operators seem to be reluctant to still commit for longer periods like three or four years. Both the Hansa Oldenburg and Nordriver for example accepted, respectively, had to accpet "shorter" periods of about 24 months, however at very sufficient rates of about usd 30,000. With a few ships coming up in the next couple of weeks it will be intereesting to see what the ships coming open in the coming weeks fix, with limited period business remaining.
The smaller sizes around 1000 TEU remains firm, however activity has decreased with only lower specification 15-16kn vessels remaining available. We have only been able to take note of a few fixtures like the Cape Bonavista for a "short term" fixture of about 9 mos to CMA at USD 18,500. Other point of note was the extensions of 2 x Alpha 1 types well in advance of their actual expiry date, perhaps emphasizing that good specification vessels in these sizes is still limited even through to 2006.
