Above 2000 TEU CMA CGM was the dominant party in the market by extending / fixing three ships in excess of 3000 TEU for periods of 5 years at relatively firm levels of USD 31,800 respectively USD 33,800 for the bigger unit. Hanjin also extended two older 3000 TEU units at a fairly decent rate level of USD 23,500 looking at the rather inefficient speed / consumption and reefer capacity. We are still fairly positive about the near future in this size and predict that rate levels will remain firm.
We have to repeat ourselves for the medium size ships between 1300 and 1900 TEU. The market for this segment continued it's gradual slow down. Rates continued to come off, however only for shorter periods as Owners are not willing to commit those rates for longer periods in the hope that demand will increase again during autumn. Ships like the Buxsailor or Westerhever for instance only agreed 2-3 months periods at mid / high usd 20's. The only "long term" fixtures in this segment were the Vulkan and the Rio Grande both absorbed by Maersk Sealand for periods of 12 option 12 months at slightly lower rates than last done but still very decent levels.
In the smaller segment around 1000 TEU activity slowed down considerably during the last couple of weeks, however rate levels seem to remain at solid levels. The number of high spec vessels until the end of the year are relatively limited.
