Since the beginning of March the projected rally for tonnage continued and geared ships, especially, have been fixing well in advance. Even though the start of the year has been active already, it appears that liner operators have still not covered their demand for the upcoming months and remain in  need of tonnage. Healthy periods of up to 48mos and rates of around 27250usd have been reported for ships above 3000teu lately with Zim and CMA CGM in the hunt for ships in this segment. Above 4000 teu there remains next to nothing and operators are looking forward into 2008 in order to secure tonnage.

The geared sector above 2000 teu has been especially active with periods of 24 months being the norm, as well as 36 months being possible. Gearless 2700 teu sizes vessels also remain at a premium and operators such as CSAV have been willing to fix ahead to secure what scarce tonnage remains.

Despite the above developements, pressure remains on the gearless ships between 1700 and 2000teu and owners have been forced to look at the shorter period / round voyage requirements that have been in plentiful supply lately with extra cargo coming out of china prior to chinese may day holidays.

Firm periods and rates have been reported from the cv 1100 front with rates reported around 12250usd for 12mos periods regardless if these ships are fixed for the feast, caribs or african feeder services. Some extreme activity has been reported from the (baltic) feeder sizes where, after a mostly ice-free winter, operators appear to be soaking up tonnage rapidly and rates have been really healthy in the last weeks.
