The rather pessimistic market outlook we gave in our last report remains unchanged with few positive factors to stop the downward trend. Added to the weaker than expected export volumes fueled by temporarily closed factories due to factory holidays and the Olympics, was the news last week that Shandong Yantai Marine Shg Co (SYMS) was ceasing trading and redelivering all of the ships on their charter.

This has resulted in an additional 12 ships in the range of 700-1600 teu available on the market, adding to those already seeking employment on the open market. Whilst most open ships in the past 2 weeks have been able to find business from other China / Japan operators, although at still declining rates, it remains to be seen whether all will find employment on an immediate basis, especially the larger 1700 teu ships that they had on charter.

Above 3000 teu we have seen some activity from the South American operator Clan which fixed the HS Wagner (3534 teu, 2353@14ts, 22,5kn on 128mts, 400rfs, gless) at 25000usd for a period of 12 mos with further options attached to be deployed in their feast/ecsa trade. Fairly decent fixtures can be reported from the 2700 teu segment considering the 20500usd the Main & Donau Trader achieved with TS Lines, but this deal has been concluded some weeks ago and is not at all reflecting the current market conditions where rates have dropped below the 20000usd mark.

The 1700 teu sizes remain the size most under pressure with rates dropping to mid usd 13000s for 1300@14t Wenchong types and down to usd 12000 for older Bv1600 - 1700 types. With ships continuously available these sizes remain under pressure.
