Container update 20th February, 2009 |
Some positive news can be reported from the bulk segment as most Index´s have been slightly adjusted over the last weeks and chartering activity has picked up nicely there. Same can be reported from the demolition front as Owners of elderly, uneconomic ships are forced to dispose their ships as they´d be the last one´s to be employed under the current market conditions.
Charterer´s have done a decent job lately to secure quality and high spec tonnage while Owners have been forced to except delivery in very remote area´s along with long positioning voyages to secure employment and keep the ships running. Above 2000teu activity remained non-existent with only very few & short-term deals reported as most operators deal with their own, surplus tonnage first before chartering tonnage from the market. There are rumours of 2800 teu vessels on subjects in Asia at low numbers for longer period. Around the 1700teu segment Wenchong types definitely have an edge over other 1700 teu types and find employment easier than the latter. However, terms and conditions of these fixtures remain almost the same and it simply comes down to better specs & economics which make them more applicable for most trade lanes. Hamburg Sued for example has been one of these players lately, chartering the "HS Semetena" (Grd, 1740teu nom, 1295 @ 14ts, 20kn on 64ts)for 6mos at roughly 6000usd. Standard 1700s are now fixing at in the mid usd 5000s for geared tonnage and v low 5000s for gls tonnage.
A few new niche players have emerged already with Account "Bolouda" taking the "Neuburg" (gless, 812teu, 515 @ 14ts, 18,5kn on 34,5ts) & "Skirner" (gless, 803teu, 380teu @ 14ts, 18,5kn on 34,5ts) for short period. Considering the current market levels we expect more operators to emerge and challenge the established services.
As you can imagine, we expect rates & periods not to rebound soon despite the on-going efforts around the globe to stimulate the world economy.
