The 1000 - 2000 teu segment remained stable with rates hovering in the low usd 4000s for 1700 teu sizes and around usd 4000 for 1100 teu types. The Caribbean has been particularly quiet in these sizes and it was heard that a number of liner companies were rationalising their services and using larger 2500 teu ships rather than the traditional 1100 teu size feeders. This will potentially further depress the market.
The sub 1000 teu market continues to be poor with large numbers of ships lying idle both in the N Continent feeder market and the China / Japan / Korea feeder market. The market has been so poor that even some Chinese owners have been seen to "lay up" ships.
Looking at the bigger picture, there is some encouraging news. Cargo volumes continue to increase on a month-on-month basis and some liner companies have reported success in achieving freight rate increases. On the supply side, one market analyst, Alphaliner, estimates that the fleet growth in 2009 will only be 7.3 pct rather than 13.4 pct which was previously forecast, largely down to owners being able to cancel and delay some orders. They also estimate that some 145 ships have been scrapped so far this year. If this market is to return to equilibrium anytime soon, both cargo growth and increased scrapping will need to continue.
