This last week has seen increased activity in all sizes. The rates for panamax and post panamax fixtures continue to increase, however, what is most newsworthy in the last week is the increase in activity in the feeder market, particularly in Asia. Rates are moving up with every fixture and this pressure from the smaller sizes should provide impetus for the whole charter market. The summer period will be crucial for the market to see if the momentum continues.

In the larger 4000 teu plus sizes a number of charterers are now looking further forward to the end of 2010 and 2011 to secure tonnage. Earlier this month news leaked out about 3 x 6400 teu ships fixing to CSAV for 3 years at rates rumoured to be usd 22000 / 24000 / 25000 for each year respectively. Otherwise a 5700 teu relet ship was reported fixed at usd 24000 for 9 months to MSC. In addition upto 4 x 5700 teu ships were rumoured to have been concluded for end 2010 and 2011 delivery and other ships were heard being discussed even for Aug 2011 delivery! Owners are wanting significant premiums for forward fixing in the expectation of future market rises. Even with a large number of post-panamax ships destined to deliver in the coming months, it seems some charterers remain short of such tonnage.

This scramble for tonnage has not been replicated for ships below 4000 teu...yet. However with a number of requirements uncovered for June 2010 dates we expect rate increases in the coming weeks. Owners of 3500 teu ships are asking for usd 15000 for 12 months and owners are asking in the usd 7000s for 2500 - 2800 teu ships at least, especially for those ships open in Asia. The Atlantic market is slightly quieter however we expect this to be shortlived with available tonnage disappearing, as a number of owners reposition their ships to Asia to take advantage of the higher rates on offer there. Otherwise it is rumoured that a high specification 2500 teu ship was heard fixed at usd 8500 for 16 months to reefer operators.

The feeder market, especially in Asia, is extremely active with operators reporting great difficulty in securing quality tonnage. Rates are therefore rising with cv1100 tonnage breaking through the usd 5000 barrier and other good specification, fuel efficient ships achieving above usd 6000 in some instances. This is complimented by a number of fixtures of 1600 teu ships above usd 6000 for short period requirements. We expect usd 6000 to become the norm rather than the exception within short.
