A more traditional and quieter market now pervades this pre Christmas holiday period. The diverging rates seen over the last weeks continue to stretch further apart, as the mid sizes continue to face ongoing pressure in the short term, whereas the larger sized market of 2000teu+ pushes steadily higher.

Although quieter in the larger sizes, Charterers are still of course having to ensure continuity of service, and are consequently looking at vessels well into next year. Of note in the larger sizes, CSAV were very active of late, taking 5 sister CV 2500 types well into the middle of the New Year for 60 mos apiece at usd 17,500, 2 sister CV 2900 types for 36 months at $23,750, and also three conbulkers for their Med/WCSA service.

The mid sizes 1400-1700teu areas as mentioned before are steadily facing increased downward pressures, in the short term. But some Owners are willing to fix for short term in order to reap the expected rising market come the New Year. For example the Mare Ibericum taking up to 4 months charter at a much reduced level, but this will bring her back into the market well after the Chinese New Year. The fixture of the Pacific Trader to GSL in the low $15,000’s shows that although a long way off the autumnal peaks, longer periods for this size at reasonable levels are still achievable.
