The larger sector has only seen a handful of fixtures in the last fortnight, and there remain very few vessels available in the near future. The Conti Brisbane extension with PONL was the stand out fixture at $31,000. This impressive level was similar to the ‘shorter’ twelve month charter the Kerstin S achieved at the beginning of February, reflecting charterers’ needing only the shorter period before their own tonnage enters service. The slightly smaller Conti Bilbao achieved a 36 month charter at just under $25,000. Otherwise the only ‘promptish’ vessel over 2500teu is now asking $25,000 for 5 years, a staggering rate but perhaps now achievable.
Owners of the mid range sized vessels continued to press forward, and are positively pushing for 24 and 36 months. However the surging upward tide on rate levels seems to have ebbed somewhat with Charterers taking stock and declining a number of charters. Expectations though remains bullish in Owners favour, and many are able to watch to see what happens next. Of note for 12 month periods were the Cape North to OOCL for $18,975 and the San Fransisco to Hapag at $18,750 - whereas the sister vessel San Lorenzo achieved $18,250 for 24 months with Yang Ming. Also 2 Hanjin 1600 types the Hansa Castella and Catalina both extended with Hamburg Sued for $18,000.
The market for vessels of around 1000teu was very active over the last fortnight. This sector has recently seen rates jump, perhaps due to the knock on effect from the larger sizes, but also getting these sizes more in line with the overall market. The Pacc vessels Aries and Aquarius (1078 nominal/854 at 14t) achieved $12,000 for 36 mos with PIL, and sister Aquila reached $12,800 for 24 months, whereas as the slightly larger Cape Serrat reached $13,250 for 12 months.
