The larger sector saw little activity, but what was done, achieved further highs; the Ulf Ritscher getting $28,000 for 24 months with PONL and Nordstrand achieving $24,650 with NYK for 36 months. Interestingly GWSC have now taken 4 relet vessels of over 2000teu for their transpac service for periods of 1-2 years all released from Evergreen, showing a tendency for carriers to sublet where possible.
The mid sector saw rates reach $19,000 for 24 months with B170 types Wiking and Altonia, and more recently the gearless Belgian Express a Hanjin 1600 type, achieved the same. Rates for 12 months are now well established at least $20,000 for the ‘shorter’ 12 months, and Owners have altered their sights upwards yet again. Despite this, there has been increased reluctance from charterers to accept these levels as margins narrow further, and even reported closure of some lines as uneconomical. For example, Maersk are closing a Med/UK service, however both vessels on the service, the San Francisco and San Isidro have been rapidly snapped up by Hapag and Lykes. The lack of supply continues to force charterers hands when vessels are required.
The ‘sector’ around 900/1100teu was once again the most active, with rates and periods reaching new fields as demand increases. We have seen 1100teu (750 at 14t) types have reached $12,000 and $12,500, and the slightly larger New Confidence (850 at 14t) achieved $13,000 for 24 months with APL. Vessels of 1000teu have also seen marked improvements, with levels leaping to $11,500, up some 1500 dollars within a month.
