In the last fortnight the larger sectors (2000teu+) period market remained relatively dormant, but we saw the fixtures of two Hansa Mare (3987teu) vessels to PONL for 5 years for $32,500, at same levels achieved with a sister ship a short while ago for ‘only’ 3 years. Elsewhere NYK took the Baltic CS 2500 type, the ‘Victoria Schulte’ for 5 years charter starting ex yard August ’05, and Safmarine understood to have extended the ‘Columba’, a Gdynia 2100 for further 36 months trading at $23,575 on the SAECS service.
The mid ranges (1300-1800teu) mirrored the larger sector in activity, or in other words the lack of activity. However the fixtures of B170’s, and CC 1600’s types seen are still on the rise at less pronounced rises, but have now reached $19,750 for 24 months. Not surprisingly there appears to be growing reluctance from Charterers in this sector to agree terms, and failures are far from uncommon with some Charterers rearranging services to reflect same. However, services still needs to be maintained, and levels will surely remain steady.
The sector around 1000teu as advised remained the most active, and the B183 ‘Noble’, is reported as having achieved $11,750 for 12 months, up $250 for the ‘Judith Schulte’ within the last week! Slightly smaller the ex China Navigation vessel the Shansi (844teu) is understood to have achieved an astounding $10,900 with Eimskip for 12 months, this will of course include hard winter trading, but the level remains startling.
