Vessels 2000teu+ remain extremely scarce, but the whopping record rate for a transpac round voyage for the 4038teu Mare Brittanicum at $43,500 catches the breath here. However the equally impressive fixtures of the two Wulff newbuilds 4546teu Victoria and Charlotte Wulff (ex yard spring 2005) at $28,000 for 8 years to PONL continues to raise pressure for larger vessel charters. Slightly smaller the the 2456teu Buxhansa goes to ANL for 36 months at $25,000 and the 2109teu Conti Seattle went to APL for the same period at $21,975.
Once again a couple of rates in the mid ranges 1400/1900teu has put the fox firmly back amongst the chickens here. There was perhaps some belief that a ceiling had been established in this sector at a firm $20,500 for 12 months, as achieved by the Lissy Schulte and Westerhever respectively. However, since then we hear rumours of fixture(s) over $21,000 for 12 months and also low 20’s for 24 months. Subjects are yet to be confirmed on various charters, and some are still not being lifted, but the sentiment is still bullish for owners, however how far and for how long can this be sustained?
A quieter fortnight for vessels around 1000teu, however having seen so many fixed away recently means rates remain very strong. The RW49 Birgit Naber rated $11,700 for 24 months Atlantic trading with EWL, and the B183 Noble is believed to have achieved $11,750 for a similar period. Both fixtures point to the market remaining bullish.
