Market Report

We have witnessed a marked increase in both activity and charter rates over the last couple of weeks. Only the very optimistic would have predicted such a development. We estimate a 35 percent increase in the number of fixtures compared to the number in our previous report. With the increased market activity, charter rates and charter periods have increased as well, primarily for larger and medium sized vessels. This is best observed in the 2700 TEU size ships, that obtained around usd 21,000 21,500 for periods of 2 years a couple of weeks ago and are now are fixing for periods of 3 years at around usd 22,000-22,500. B 170 Types were fixed at around usd 17,750 for 1 year a couple of weeks back and are now achieving the same rate for 2 years. We are still very confident that the market for the bigger vessels will at least remain stable if not even improve due to the limited number of ships that are still available in 2006. Good specification medium size and smaller ships around 1000 TEU should also not face to many difficulties in the coming weeks, however it remains to be seen whether the market will sustain the present levels until the end of the year.

In excess of 2000 TEU, ships in 2006 are becoming a scarce commodity. The ajority of ships which were still pen in 2006 have meantime been absorbed y the market, even for 3rd or 4th quarter positions. As mentioned above, hips of around 2700/2800 TEU are now being fixed at around USD 20,000-22,500 for periods of 3 years like the St. Cergue to ZIM and the Stadt Dresden and Stadt Rostock to SCI. Furthermore, it is interesting to observe that liner companies have even started to search for panamaxes for forward dates. MSC was particularly active by chartering four Danaos owned Panmaxes for 12 years at USD 22,800. There are rumours that MSC has also bought a couple of Conti controlled panamaxes.

In the medium size between 1300 and 1900 TEU we have seen a sustainable increase in activity. Only Maersk Line has extended a handful of ships in this size at around usd 18,000 for 12 mos, which is slightly higher than what was fixed a couple of weeks ago. A few Owners were even suceeding to push the periods upto 2, 3 or even 4 years periods at comparably high rates. Wehr, for instance, fixed two of their B 170's to CMA for 3 respectively 4 years at USD 16,100 respectively 15,250 net of addcom.

In the smaller sizes, we notice a marked difference in rates between the Atlantic and Asian markets, where owners are able to achieve better rates. Conservative demand from the inter asian operators and the availability of relet tonnage remain the important factors. Modern ships around 1100-1200 TEU are achieving rates around USD 13,000 for periods of 1 year like the Rio Lawrence that went to QC at these terms.
