Although the market has been relatively quiet, the overall trend has been undeniably positive. The dramatic rises of 1st quarter will not be seen again, as the markets would surely not be able to cope with such a surge, however the levels overall continue to nudge ever upwards. The expected reduction or realignment has not fully materialised, and Owners are willing to do shorter periods to carry them into the Autumn where a stronger market is expected. With every passing week, Owners will no doubt feel confident in levels as more slots will need to be filled for the forthcoming peak season.

The 2000teu+ sector saw some renewed activity after a very quiet period due to lack of tonnage, and of note SCI finally secured tonnage for period with the gearless relet Zim Chicago for 36 months at $24,000 for their European service. Clan took the Gdynia 2000 type Glory for 36 months at $26,000, and the same rate and period was achieved by the Santa Giorgina with a Canmar extension. Although few vessels are available, a number of private negotiations are understood to be taking place, and we further understand that the Cape Race has been extended with MSC at an unreported level.

The mid-range of about 12-1900teu has seen a positive increase in fixtures, rates have remained relatively steady, but with overall slight improvements. The B170 Wehr Altona managed $22,000 for an NYK charter of just under twenty four months, and we understand the Hansa Oldenburg has extended Delmas for 12, 24 or 36 months at $24,050, 23,050 or 22,550 repsectively. The Cape Negro got $19,750 for 37-39 months extension with Yang Ming, and the Wenchong 1500 Hansa Stavanger achieved $22,700 for a 'shorter' twelve months with CP Ships. However most interestingly the Dorikos and Thermaikos both Hyundai 1500 have managed long charters of 5 or 8 years with CMA/CGM for staggering rates of $17,250 or $16,250. This is the same owner of the Laconikos, who got eight years with the same charterer, and must be seen as a very positive fixture for owners of this type of vessel.

Activity in the 800/1200teu range had also slowed, with the rates achieved essentially level, but the periods are now commonly 24 months. We noted the Caecilia Schulte a B183 attained $14,000 for twenty four months with CMA/CGM, and the Cape Hatteras 923teu reached $13,750 for a 24 month extension with PONL. Once again, although relatively quiet, the continuing lack of tonnage, and the high demand will keep margins tight for charterers.
