Container update 16th August, 2004 |
In the 2000+ size, we hear plenty of gossip and chatter, and the market has and will remain strongest here. However, we understand that Maersk have taken two Panamax Hyundai 5000’s Charles Dickens, and Ernest Hemingway for eight years for just under $ 30,000, whereas NYK have taken the two Dauelsburg vessels Bellavia and Octavia for eight years for a rate said to be nearer $ 32-34,000!! In the 2000+ size, CSAV managed to snap up the Baltic CS 2500 Frisia Rostock, a rare 2004 newbuild still available this year, and the third sister this charterer has taken, for 75 months at $ 20,500. Also, Montemar extended the Harald S for five years at $ 23,250, and Maersk have taken the two Thomas Schulte VWS 2500 newbuilds for five years at $ 21,000 per day.
The mid range saw an increase in activity, with Owners still accepting shorter periods for premium rates, but also being able to secure longer term. The CS1400 Novia reached
$ 18,950 for 42 months, whereas the sister Olivia took $ 22,250 for a seven month charter with Maersk. Gold Star Line have naturally declared options for both the Cape Nati and Norman at a ‘mere’ $ 18,000. The optional rate last year that appeared terribly steep, but with similar vessels now expecting at least $ 23,000 for a similar period, it must be quite pleasing for the Charterers.
The 800/1200 teu sector also saw long periods attained, and rates continue to push back any conceivable boundaries. The 1122teu Jade Trader took $ 13,450 for a 36 month extension with LNL, and the older Franconia managed a startling $ 15,950 for an 18 month extension with Cheng Lie. For a shorter term fixture, the Hansa Greifswald took a whopping $ 14,700 for six months Atlantic trading with MSL.
