The ‘tranquil’ summer months now appear long gone. Charterers are extremely keen to secure tonnage and are being forced to take longer periods for smaller vessels. All sizes have seen increased enquiries, and rumours continue to circulate on many unsubstantiated fixtures.

The 2000teu+ sector has once again been full of market rumours, of vessels on subjects, and possible rates and periods. Whatever has been said, the sentiment remains clearly positive for Owners, with panamax vessels being taken well into 2006, and the sub-panamax 2500 types now into 3rd quarter 2005. We heard of the 5089teu Wehr Singapore and Hong Kong ex yard 2006, taken for eight years by PONL at $30,000, and we understand that the Dauelsburg Hyundai 5000’s mentioned in our last report achieved either $31,500 for eight years or an astronomic $37,000 for five years! CSAV have managed to secure another 2500teu type namely the Nord Pacific for six years at $20,750 from July next year to join their expanding armada, approaching some thirty five vessels between 2-3000teu.

The mid ranges are now seeing a growing number of fixtures into first quarter 2005 reflecting the increasingly urgent rush to ‘secure’ tonnage already. Charterers, although preferring not too, are also having to face longer periods with four vessels having got between 30-36 months with differing charterers. NYK took the Kuru 1500 Sunman for $22,000 for 36 months, whilst two B186 types went for the same level to NYK and TS Lines for thirty months. Interestingly the Hansa Brandenburg has taken $25,000 per day for a 12 month charter extension with MSL, a rate echoing a ‘shorter’ charter.

Around 1000teu a good number of fixtures were reported with longer periods increasingly achieved. The B190 Cape Scott 1170teu fixed a fruther 36 months with PONL at $15,000. We should remember the remarkable (at the time) $16,000 level that the sister Sigrid Wehr achieved only in May for a 12 month charter. A clutch of Stadt 1100 types were extended at remarkable levels for 24 and 36 months by PONL at $14,500 and Melfi for $13,700 respectively.
