In the segment above 2000TEU particularly CSAV has shown appetite in ships this month by taking/extending 6 x 2500 TEU vessels controlled by Doehle for a period of 5 years at levels around usd 22.000. Furthermore they have taken the Nordatlantic at a stunning rate of USD 23,750 also for 5 years with a dely in mid 2005 only - a higher rate for a more forward position ! The slightly larger Wadi Alrayan obtained USD 29.300 for a 3 year period from the active Chileans. We should also not fail to highlight the fixtures of four baby panamaxes fixed by P&O Nedlloyd for 5 years at USD 30.000 net with deliveries 3rd and 4th quarter 2005, which is slightly above last done in this segment.
Between 1300 and 1900 TEU the demand for ships remained very high. This fact is reflected by the rates concluded for the few fixtures in that size. The CC1600 Type Merkur Cloud achieved USD 22,150 net from Messrs. PIL for the established period of 3 years for ships in that size. This is some USD 200 more in comparision to what a sister vessel fixed one months ago for a period of 30 months only. Also the fixture of the gearless 1684 TEU Pride of Dehli for one year at usd 24,750 is quite notable as it shows that Owners are gaining a premium if they are willing to fix the ship for shorter periods.
Around 1000 TEU activiy and demand was very strong this month. It was interesting to watch that also the smaller vessels are mainly fixing period of about 3 years now. Furthermore we have noticed that quite a lot of Newbuildings with deliveries mid/end 2005 have been fixed in this segment. SYMS were the most active ones in this sector when extending three gearless B183 types from Hanseatic Lloyd at usd high 13000 for 3 years and fixing three 1118 TEU newbuildings with deliveries end 2004, mid 2005 and end 2005 for a period of 40 months at USD 13900 for the earlier Islandia and USD 11500 for the later ones.
