The last few weeks saw rate and periods stabilising in many sectors with operators returning to the charter market with their requirements. This was particularly true in the 2000teu plus sizes where demand remained strong in both the Atlantic and Pacific Basin. Owners are largely expecting this period of stability to continue for the coming months in all sizes, especially in relation to modern tonnage. However, older, lower specification vessels will continue to face difficulty in finding suitable employment. We expect Autumn will be the next crucial time in determing the direction of the market.

As already mentioned above, ships in excess of 2000 TEU have still been in high demand during the last four weeks. It was interesting to watch that Emirates Lines finally entered the charter market by taking two Doehle controlled 3100 TEU vessels for 3 years at a rate of USD 24,500. Emirates will trade these ships in the Indamex service in partnership with ZIM. Ships around 2500/2800 TEU are still achieving rates around USD 21,000/22,000 for
periods of 2 years.

Between 1300 and 1900 TEU activity picked up a little bit in comparison to last month. We have seen more ships in this size being absorbed by the market with rates stabilizing around usd 17,500 basis 12 months periods. It was interesting to observe that gearless units were achieving usd 500 less than their geared competition although much of this tonnage has now been taken with some charterers seeing good value.

The 1000teu sizes continue to remain active with rates holding and in some cases periods improving from 12 months to 18 months, as with the fixtures of the SIMA PRIDE and CAPE CREUS. The 590@ 14t CAPE CREUS was heard to achieve a remarkably firm rate of usd 12500 to MSC for Australia trading. Again however the story of the older / slower vessels struggling to find decent employment clouded the market. This was especially true for those owners wanting to limit their trading area to just the Far East. The continued availability of relet tonnage from Chinese operators was also another softening factor with fixtures of the SILVER OCEAN and PHU MY reported.
