The chartering activity we experienced in december was relatively low in comparison to the amount of fixtures we have witnessed during october and november. One might be tempted to say that this is even a tradition as the market is usually becoming more quiet towards the end of the year. The big difference we have seen this year however, is the fact that the market is remaining firm if not even slightly improving and that there are virtually no ships spot as the ships which were ought to be open during the "dangerous" time of the year had already been absorbed by the market well in advance.

In the larger size of 2000 TEU plus we can only report a handful of fixtures this month. The most remarkable one was definetely the Hansa Constitution which has been fixed by CSAV for a 5 years period at USD 29,500. This is some USD 1000 net more what comparable or even more sophisticated ships obtained just two or three weeks ago.

In the medium size between 1300 and 1900 TEU we have not only seen the most activity during the last couple of weeks but also the biggest rate improvements. At the beginning of this month the B 170 type Nordstar has been extended by the danish giant Maersk Sealand for a period of 4 years, being meanwhile the going period in that size, at a cracking rate of USD 25,800 gross. Just two weeks later the sister vessel Lissy Schulte obtained not less than USD 1500 net more for the same period.

Around 1000 TEU we have by far not seen as many fixtures as we reported recently. Apart from a few extensions of the Alpha 1 types, it was the Hansa Wismar that caught market observers' attention. This B-183 type has been fixed by feederoperator EWL at a stunning rate of USD 15,910. This is almost USD 1,000 more what a sister vessel obtained not even a month ago.
